If you are a resident of Hong Kong and you own a pet, you should license it so that it is recognized by the authorities and get appropriate protection. Doing so will also help these pets to be safe from vulnerable diseases. Make the relationship with your pet sweeter, by offering them more protection through licensing with relevant government agency.
If you have one or more dogs in your house, whose age more than three years of age, it is a good idea to vaccinate them against rabies, and license them as well. Pet registration in Hong Kong is not only very important, it is mandatory as well. The law says that you should license your pet, upon reaching more than five months of age.
In order to license your pet and provide it a vaccine, you can take it to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), who will help you to get a license for your dog as well. The license should be ready within 15 to 20 minutes.
The veterinary surgeons
There is another option to take the dog to the veterinary surgeons, who is authorized by the SPCA centers for rabies vaccination and also for micro chipping. It will be forwarded through the head clinic, and will be forwarded to you ultimately. In case of micro chipping, it might take a longer period of time, but it will surely be not more than two days, under acute pressure. A private surgeon may impose additional charges for issuing the license and micro chipping.
Renewing the license
The license of the dog, once granted, will be active for three years, and then will have to be renewed. But if your dog has a microchip, there is no need to issue the license for the pet again. If you leave Hong Kong for another country, where dog license is important, you should remember one thing, that the license is non-transferable. A dog is licensed, at a particular place is licensed under the jurisdiction of the place, where the license is issued. In case of a request for address change, the request must be done in writing to AFCD, within 5 days of shifting to a new address.
This system of licensing the dogs helps in a better management of the animals, from both the authorities’ side, as well as the pet master’s side. In case a dog is lost, with the aid of the license, it will be easy for the enforcement authorities to search for the dog. In case, the master of a dog is found irresponsible, it will help the authorities to prosecute the dog owners in a proper way, as well.
Private veterinary surgeons may impose additional fees for licensing and vaccinating the dogs, pet registration done by AFCD will only be charged only with HK$80 to cover all necessary paperwork. The said amount should provide assurance to both the government and pet owners, and additional protection for dogs.
